2025 Transit Trends: Shaping the Future of Urban Mobility

Written by Keolis Communications Team | Mar 6, 2025 3:48:30 PM

Public transit is at a pivotal moment, with 2025 poised to bring transformative changes in ridership patterns, technological advancements, and efficiency efforts. As cities adapt to evolving commuter needs, Keolis is embracing forward-thinking innovation and resilience to create efficient, safe, and accessible mobility solutions.

A Shift in Commuting Habits

A recent Federal Transit Administration (FTA) report on transit trends indicates a significant resurgence in ridership, with a nationwide increase of over 17% from 2022 to 2023. This growth suggests that more Americans are relying on buses, subways, light rail, and other transit modes for work, school, and daily activities. While the rise of hybrid and remote work has reshaped traditional commuting patterns, increasing mandates for in-office workdays are also expected to influence ridership. Transit agencies are observing a shift away from traditional rush-hour peaks towards greater demand for all-day, flexible service options. Even with the anticipated return of traditional commuters, the pandemic has highlighted the need for adaptable transit services that can cater to a wider range of travel needs beyond the typical 9-to-5 schedule.

Technology-Driven Transformation

Emerging technologies are also revolutionizing transit operations. AI and data analytics enable dynamic route planning and real-time service adjustments, which can improve efficiency and passenger satisfaction. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms, or digital apps that integrate multiple transportation services into a single platform, can bridge public transit with ride-hailing, bike-sharing, and micro-mobility solutions, creating cohesive urban transit networks. Keolis has been operating France's first global mobility contract in Dijon since 2017. This unique contract encompasses all transport modes in Greater Dijon, including buses, trams, bicycle services, and parking. The DiviaMobilités app, launched in 2025, serves as a comprehensive MaaS solution. This all-in-one multimodal app integrates various public transport options with features like booking, route planning, and real-time updates. The contract aims to simplify travel, encourage sustainable mobility, and reduce single-occupancy vehicle use.

Efficiency Takes Center Stage

Electric buses, with their fewer parts and greater efficiency, are revolutionizing public transportation. These vehicles don't require mid-life overhauls, and while their initial capital expenditure may be higher than diesel buses, they can provide significant savings to taxpayers over their usable life. Electrification, along with hydrogen fuel cells, is playing a key role in reducing emissions and transforming urban transit systems. Keolis’ partner Foothill Transit proudly operates what is currently the largest hydrogen fleet in North America with 33 hydrogen buses.

Transit leaders, such as Keolis North America CEO Brad Thomas, are embracing alternative fuels and cutting-edge technologies to modernize fleets. In a recent Smart Cities Dive article, Thomas emphasized the industry’s focus on technological innovation to improve efficiency:

“We’re utilizing new technology everywhere, in all parts of our industry. We will continue to see alternative fuels, whether that’s electrification, hydrogen fuel cells, or all sorts of new technologies. I think we’ll start seeing those significantly increasing in the fleets around the country,” said Thomas.

Advancing Economic Opportunity and Commercial Growth

Transit and economic opportunity are powerful drivers of commercial growth. By expanding service to new areas and enhancing connectivity, transit agencies can attract businesses and stimulate economic development along transit corridors. Strategic transit hubs can revitalize urban spaces, creating economic activity centers and spurring commercial investment through transit-oriented development (TOD). Improved transit infrastructure enhances economic productivity by reducing commute times and improving the movement of goods and services, making businesses more competitive and fostering long-term economic growth.

Conclusion: The Future of Public Transit

In 2025, we’re seeing that the future of urban mobility is defined by adaptability, efficiency, and innovation. By embracing these trends, transit agencies can create systems that are more efficient, equitable, and resilient than ever before. Investments in technology, infrastructure, and accessibility will not only enhance commuter experiences but also contribute to long-term climate and equity goals.

At Keolis, we’re working to ensure that public transit evolves to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world. The road ahead is one of opportunity, so let’s work towards a smarter, greener, and more connected future.
